Somali refugee children often have not known a life outside of a refugee camp unless another country accepts them in their borders. The children almost always understand that they have been given an opportunity if they are selected. They quickly learn to find that balance between remembering their cultural traditions, languages and religion while also learning new traditions, languages and ways of life. I remember one child who came to me at Easter time very confused about the meaning of finding eggs and large pink bunnies. I can’t say that I had a very good answer.
